IP issues are among the most challenging and complex considerations that life science and biotech start-ups may face. Recent headlines have shown record patent filings, offensive assertions, and licensing deals created during this exciting and innovative time for the life sciences industry. Protecting IP can be essential to attract funding or prevent competitors from unfairly competing with you. However, knowing how and when to build a robust IP portfolio can seem daunting. Here, we provide an overview of some of the IP issue facing new companies, together with a few recommendations. Our panel examines the costs, benefit, and role patents and IP may play in start-up development. Furthermore, our panel will discuss the different uses for patents in the start-up world. And, in addition, our panel will provide guidance on building an IP strategy that supports long-term business objectives and growth.
