Competitive Capital Programs

Overview

For more than a decade, the advancement of the Massachusetts life sciences ecosystem has been aided by the capital investment activities of the MLSC. These programs have translated into significant strategic investments, which have enabled anchor institutions across the Commonwealth to advance new scientific discoveries to keep Massachusetts at the cutting-edge of life sciences advances and capabilities.

These advancements continue through new MLSC capital programs aimed at workforce development and training, research and development, and manufacturing. Applicants, which may include academic organizations, research institutions, research hospitals, business incubators and other non-profit organizations, and whose projects represent positive economic contributions for the state’s life sciences ecosystem, are encouraged to learn more.

Novel Therapeutics Delivery: Encourage the development of improved manufacturing, devices, and delivery methods of existing or innovative therapies.

Bits to Bytes: Encourage the use of high throughput, systems-based approaches to generate large datasets and novel predictive algorithms to answer important scientific questions.

Open Capital ProgramCapital projects that support the life sciences ecosystem by enabling and supporting research and development and commercialization and/or manufacturing in the Commonwealth.

Women’s Health: Encourage collaboration across industry to develop solutions for the treatment of conditions which disproportionately/differently affect women.

Novel Therapeutics Delivery

The Novel Therapeutics Delivery Capital Call is designed to provide grants for capital projects in Massachusetts by supporting the development of novel technologies for the delivery of existing or innovative therapies. Increased drug complexity, manufacturing, bioavailability challenges, and demand for strong drug performance are driving the need for unprecedented drug-delivery technology. The Center aims to foster unique and non-traditional collaborations between academia and industry to solve the medical field’s greatest challenges in this space. It is the expectation that the lead company will provide the salary and co-mentorship for a new scientist, as well as additional financial, in-kind salary, equipment/reagents, or other forms of project support.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must secure at least one industry partner.

Bits to Bytes

The Bits to Bytes Capital Call is designed to provide grants for capital projects in Massachusetts by enabling and supporting the generation and analysis of large datasets to answer pressing life science questions and to attract and train data scientists in the Commonwealth.

Massachusetts recognizes that the role of data sciences in life sciences innovation has evolved rapidly and, if encouraged and harnessed, has the potential to catalyze innovation at unprecedented rates.  Investment in generating annotated datasets and training data scientists for life science research is required to sustain Massachusetts’ global leadership position in life science innovation. The goal of this call is to support to encourage the development of ‘digital infrastructure’ and novel algorithms that can answer pressing life science questions and to attract and train data scientists.

Open Capital Program

The Open Capital Program is designed to provide grants for capital projects that support the life sciences ecosystem in Massachusetts by enabling and supporting research and development, commercialization and/or manufacturing in the Commonwealth. Applicants are academic organizations, research institutions, research hospitals, business incubators and other non-profit organizations. MLSC recognizes that investment in capital projects and infrastructure is required to create and sustain the attributes that make Massachusetts attractive to innovation clusters. This program is designed to help fund high potential economic development projects that promise to make a significant contribution to the state’s life sciences ecosystem.

Women’s Health

The Women’s Health Capital Call is designed to provide grants for capital projects in Massachusetts by supporting development of novel solutions to treat conditions that solely, disproportionately, or differently affect women. The repercussions are grave, with long-standing impacts on individuals, the healthcare system, and employers. This Capital Call aims to enhance the Massachusetts ecosystem by supporting collaborative research and potentially the creation or enhancement of Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health.
