SUMMARY:2023 Boston State of Diabetes
DESCRIPTION:The State of Diabetes: Boston is an annual event that tackles where we are in the state of diabetes\, right here\, right now. During the community day of access and education event\, we will focus on providing free diabetes screenings\, diabetes resources\, and raising the level of consciousness around health equity for the nearly one out of two Americans with diabetes or prediabetes. \nHealth inequity contributes to worse health outcomes and a higher risk for diabetes and many other diseases\, undermining the wellbeing of our most underserved communities. The State of Diabetes event will focus on the experience of people with diabetes and their experiences related to diabetes management\, prevention\, and overall health and wellness. \nThe American Diabetes Association® will bring together industry leaders\, health care providers\, and innovators on a public panel to explore and address health inequity and inspire solutions and resources to engage the community. \nFollowing the panel\, we will also host a Day of Access (open to community members) to receive FREE health screenings and resources\, including blood pressure\, A1C\, foot health\, and oral health checks.

SUMMARY:Using Evidence and Data to Illuminate Our Food Systems
DESCRIPTION:We are embedded in a crowded\, complex landscape of global challenges—climate change and environmental degradation\, mounting social upheaval and inequities\, and increasing public health and food insecurity risks. Food systems sit at the center of these challenges and constitute major causes of the climate crisis. But they can also be key parts of the solution. \nAt a time when facts and data are often openly regarded as suspect by political leaders and business interests\, the rigors of evidence-based research may help to bring about wholesale changes in attitudes\, political discourse\, and social action. Innovations in data gathering and analysis will play a vital role in charting a positive and sustainable direction for food system transformation. \nJessica Fanzo\, a climate\, nutrition\, and immunology expert\, will discuss how these innovations can illuminate our complex food systems and also equip decision-makers to navigate the difficult course of making our food systems more resilient in the face of the climate crisis and environmental instability. She will highlight recent developments her team has initiated\, including the Food Systems Dashboard and the Food Systems Countdown Initiative.

SUMMARY:Drug Development Boot Camp®
DESCRIPTION:The Drug Development Boot Camp® provides intensive virtual training in new medicine development training\, to those who are already experts in the industry. This training is in its fourteenth year\, and has a reputation for being transformative. There is a reason that people say\, this is the training to take. \nDuring COVID the Drug Development Boot Camp® was moved to a virtual in real time format\, rather than skipping the training during lock-down. Many of you will remember that the training was run at the Harvard Club in Boston. We hope to return to face to face format eventually\, but we are remaining virtual to maximize the access. \nHundreds of people from the Boston/Mass region have taken this training. Isn’t it time that you looked into it? Register at www.drugstomarket.com/drugbootcamp \n$50 off for ‘MassLifeSci50’ code mention.

SUMMARY:2024 State of Possible Conference
DESCRIPTION:MassBio’s State of Possible Conference is the premier event for the Massachusetts life sciences industry. \nAttendees from the lab to the c-suite will experience engaging panel discussions on surviving biotech’s choppy waters and rewriting what is possible in science\, a fireside chat on state and federal affairs\, an inspiring keynote from 3x Super Bowl champion and sickle cell disease advocate Devin McCourty\, and ample time for networking\, partnering\, and celebrating. New this year – we will recognize MassBio members during an award showcase\, including the Henri A. Termeer Innovative Leadership Award\, and host a surprise experience designed to “give back” to the community. \nThis year’s theme is Meeting the Moment. Our “moment” in time is the industry growing differently than before; progress is being made on longtime unmet medical needs such as Alzheimer’s\, cancer\, and sickle cell; and biotechs and biopharma companies continue to deliver for patients despite unprecedented attacks on innovation. We meet this moment as we have tackled past inflection points: together as a community. \nMassachusetts is the state of possible because of the incredible density of brainpower and innovative ideas across not just the life sciences\, but science and technology more broadly. Our Massachusetts story is one of turning possibilities into realities—turning hope into treatments for patients. Register today to join 500+ attendees from across the ecosystem.

SUMMARY:How might genetic technologies contribute to addressing climate change?
DESCRIPTION:Join Connecting Genetics to Climate on May 8 at Boston University’s CDS Conference Center for a day of conversations and insight into novel and potentially controversial emerging genetic technologies that can be used to address climate change. \nResearchers at universities\, institutes\, government labs\, and companies are exploring how genetics might be a tool to help with problems posed by a changing climate and how society can and should be involved in decision-making. Some technologies are already being trialed and many more are under development. \nAs these technologies are developed and become available\, policymakers and communities will have to consider vital questions\, such as: Who should decide when technologies are developed and used? What are foreseeable consequences? Can we design\, and monitor use of\, technologies to address potential unforeseen consequences? \nWe will spend the day in an interactive workshop\, discussing these issues with experts in the field. In the evening\, we will be hosting a public conversation\, moderated by Boston Globe journalist David Abel\, featuring perspectives from scientific researchers\, journalists\, and policy experts\, including Andrew Revkin\, award-winning environment journalist formerly with the New York Times; Melissa Hoffer\, Massachusetts State Climate Chief; Sir Richard Roberts\, Nobel laureate and Chief Science Officer at New England Biolabs; and Teal Brown Zimring\, Executive Director of Lab to Land. \nAll are welcome to join!
