DESCRIPTION:Intro to Biotech is a course that explores the business considerations in biotech as well as basic biological processes that are foundational to the biopharma and life sciences industry. The course is divided into two parts: Intro to Business and Intro to Science. Intro to Business provides an overview of regulation through instruction\, storytelling\, and small group sessions. Topics such as market share\, phases of development\, patient population\, and safety profile will be reviewed. Intro to Science focuses on the basics of cells and molecular biology that help students’ overall understanding of how a life science company operates. Lab work will also be implemented during in-person sessions. \nDate & Time \nIntro to Business – Tuesday\, March 15th\, 2022 9:00 AM -5:00 PM EST\nIntro to Science – Wednesday\, March 16th\, 2022 9:00 AM -5:00 PM EST \nPlease plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before class starts. Class will start at 9:00 AM. We will have breaks in between. \nThis course will be held in-person. Proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test result (72 hours prior) will be required. A library of prerecorded content celebrating and recognizing STEM learning innovation and best practices will also be available. \nThe Keynote speaker will be Worcester Polytechnic Institute President Laurie Leshin\, the 16th president and first woman to lead WPI. An accomplished geochemist and space scientist\, she earned her BS in Chemistry\, summa cum laude\, at Arizona State University\, and an MS and PhD in Geochemistry at the California Institute of Technology\, which honored her in 2021 with its Distinguished Alumni Award. She also serves on the STEM Advisory Council and has played a key role in expanding access to high-quality STEM education for students across the Commonwealth. In May 2022\, she will assume a new role\, serving as the director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, operated by Caltech for NASA.
