The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) team recently joined leaders from the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) and local officials at the GMGI Gloucester Biotechnology Academy to celebrate their Biotechnology Certificate program receiving the MLSC’s Pathmaker validation. The designation recognizes the program’s alignment with industry standards and highlights its success in preparing students for careers in Massachusetts’ growing life sciences ecosystem.
The MLSC’s Pathmaker program supports workforce training programs that address critical skills gaps while strengthening connections between employers and talented workers across the Commonwealth. In addition to providing funding opportunities, the initiative serves as a mark of quality for programs that demonstrate alignment with the PathmakerBIO Core Competencies and the evolving needs of the industry. Through this validation process, the MLSC helps prospective students identify programs that provide the technical and professional skills necessary for success in the life sciences workforce.
The Academy’s Biotechnology Certificate program equips students with the knowledge and experience needed to pursue careers as entry-level technicians in biotechnology and life sciences laboratories. During the six-month program, students complete two semesters of coursework followed by a 12-week paid industry co-op experience. During this program, participants gain hands-on experience in a variety of areas including molecular biology, cell culture, and biomanufacturing while developing essential skills in communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. Students also benefit from mentorship opportunities, guest lectures, field trips, and exposure to industry-standard laboratory operations.
Since its inception in 2016, 90 percent of GMGI graduates have gone on to secure full-time employment or continue their scientific education. Furthermore, graduates over the past two years have reported a mean starting salary of $55,000.
The MLSC has been a supporter of the academy since the very beginning, providing more than $4 million in grant funding for research infrastructure and training equipment over the past decade. Additionally, the MLSC has supported employer partners in providing more than 40% of the Academy’s internship opportunities, funding a total of 94 internships for GMGI students.
