The density of the Massachusetts life sciences cluster is characterized by the concentration of research institutions, biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies, healthcare organizations, and technology/life sciences startups across the state. This dense cluster expands beyond Boston and Cambridge, with more than 1,000 life sciences companies, top-tier academic and research institutions, training organizations, and incubators and accelerators collaborating, innovating, hiring, and investing in Massachusetts.
Cities and towns have significant opportunities to participate in and support the growth of the life sciences economy in their region. Through the new Municipal Basecamp, the MLSC is seeking to create a continued engagement with the municipalities to attract life science investments. This program offers customized support and tailored guidance at no cost to address the specific needs of each municipality.
Some may be looking to improve their BioReadiness, as evaluated by MassBio. Others may be seeking to attract interest in a particular site or property. Many may benefit from referral to and guidance on other existing state programs to support infrastructure improvements or increased targeted marketing efforts. Whatever the need, the MLSC is happy to engage with municipal and regional governments to help assess and build a roadmap to achieve whatever the stated goals may be.
Reach out today to schedule a conversation or a visit to your municipality to talk more about the opportunities life sciences could bring for your region.
MassBio offers important resources for companies considering locating in Massachusetts by evaluating communities across the Commonwealth who are BioReady. From biotech-zoned science parks to streamlined permitting, to robust infrastructure, and pre-permitted biotech sites, Massachusetts municipalities currently offer many resources for companies looking to expand or relocate.
Because of the state’s rich history in biotechnology, many of its cities and towns have increasingly adopted local policies that greatly ease the pathway for renovation or new construction of biotech laboratory and manufacturing facilities. Companies can then work with MassEcon to evaluate their needs and current available properties that meet the appropriate specifications.
MassDevelopment helps cities and towns revitalize, develop, and transform. Their financing and real estate expertise supports funding for municipalities including tax-exempt bonds for special projects, infrastructure improvements, real estate loans, and clean energy upgrades.
MassWorks provides grants to communities to help them prepare for success and contribute to the long term strength and sustainability of our Commonwealth, now as a part of the Community One-Stop for Growth. MassWorks is a competitive grant program that provides the largest and most flexible source of capital funds to municipalities and other eligible public entities primarily for public infrastructure projects that support and accelerate housing production, spur private development, and create jobs throughout the Commonwealth.
Massachusetts is home to more than 1,000 life sciences companies, top-tier academic and research institutions, training organizations, and incubators and accelerators. Use the map below to explore what makes Massachusetts is the #1 life sciences ecosystem in the world.
