MLSC Joins UMass Amherst to Celebrate Opening of High-Field NMR Facility

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) team recently joined the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst to celebrate the opening of a new 800 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer, marking a significant investment in research infrastructure that will expand access to advanced molecular analysis capabilities in Western Massachusetts.

The grand opening was held in conjunction with UMass Amherst’s Power of High Resolution NMR Symposium which brought together leaders from academia and industry to highlight the technology’s potential to advance biomedical research and accelerate drug discovery. Supported by more than $4.4 million in funding through MLSC’s Research Infrastructure program in 2024, the new spectrometer is the first of its kind in Western Massachusetts, providing researchers with advanced capabilities to investigate complex biological systems.

NMR spectroscopy enables scientists to examine the structure, interactions, and dynamics of molecules at the atomic level. By revealing detailed insights into how proteins and other biomolecules behave, the technology helps researchers better understand disease mechanisms and evaluate how potential therapies interact with their targets. These capabilities are critical to advancing research into diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s, with applications spanning drug discovery, structural biology, and metabolomics.

Housed within UMass Amherst’s Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS), the new instrument will serve as a shared resource accessible to academic researchers both within and beyond the university, as well as researchers from companies of all sizes, including emerging biotechnology companies that may otherwise lack access to this level of specialized equipment. The NMR facility supports approximately 40 UMass Amherst research groups, colleges, as well as colleges and universities across Western New England and industry collaborators nationwide.

This celebration builds upon the MLSC’s longstanding partnership with UMass Amherst and its commitment to strengthening the research and innovation ecosystem in Western Massachusetts. Originally established in 2014 with a $95 million investment from the MLSC, IALS helps translate fundamental scientific discoveries into technologies, products, and services that improve human health. To date, MLSC has awarded more than $100 million to UMass Amherst through its funding programs, supporting world-class research infrastructure, fostering academic-industry collaboration, and expanding opportunities for scientific discovery across the Commonwealth.

Researchers can explore the new NMR spectrometer and other MLSC-funded equipment available at UMass Amherst and other institutions across Massachusetts through the MLSC’s Research Equipment Database (R.E.D.).

Applications for the MLSC’s Research Infrastructure program are open until Nov. 6, 2026, at 1 p.m. EST. Click here to learn more and apply today.
