Innovation, Job Creation, & Equity Celebrated in Lead Up to BIO 2025

This June, the Healey-Driscoll Administration and Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) partnered to announce more than $41 million in awards towards health equity, job creation, life sciences training opportunities, and women’s health innovation. Through a series of events across the Commonwealth, state and industry leaders at every level highlighted how support from the MLSC continues to position Massachusetts as the global leader in the life sciences.

Kicking off the events, Interim Economic Development Secretary Ashley Stolba and MLSC President and CEO Kirk Taylor, MD joined life sciences and health equity leaders at the Howe Innovation Center at the Perkins School for the Blind to announce the awardees of the MLSC’s Health Equity Accelerator. Five projects received awards of $50,000 targeting health disparities, fostering research, and solutions that promote health equity in Massachusetts. The program is designed to advance health equity in underserved communities throughout the Commonwealth.

Just days later, Governor Maura Healey joined President Taylor and state and local officials at Lila Sciences in Cambridge to announce $29.9 million in tax incentive awards to 33 life sciences companies. The awards, provided through the MLSC’s Tax Incentive program, are expected to create 1,519 new life sciences industry jobs in Massachusetts. The Governor also announced a new competitive round of the Tax Incentive program, which will run until July 16, 2025. Click here to learn more.

On Friday of that same week, Secretary Stolba, Labor and Workforce Secretary Lauren Jones, and President Taylor joined life sciences and workforce leaders at ArLab, a state-of-the-art career institute hosted by JVS Boston and Quincy College with support from MLSC funding, to announce more than $7.2 million in recent Pathmaker awards. The funding has helped create 656 life sciences training opportunities across the Commonwealth. The MLSC’s Pathmaker program funds industry-aligned training programs that address critical skills and talent supply gaps and connects skilled, diverse workers with life science career opportunities in Massachusetts.

Finally, heading into the BIO Convention, the Healey-Driscoll Administration and the MLSC announced $3.7 million in funding to support 16 projects through the MLSC’s Women’s Health Initiative. The awards were announced during a Women’s Health-focused convening held at EPAM Continuum, a leading digital transformation services and product engineering company. The event featured remarks and panels highlighting innovators, researchers, and policymakers engaged in advocating for translational efforts in Women’s Health and healthcare.

June has been a month of tremendous growth and momentum for the life sciences here in Massachusetts. The MLSC is proud to partner with the Healey-Driscoll Administration and looks forward to continuing to support the Commonwealth’s life sciences ecosystem at every level.
