Leaders from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC), UMass Lowell, Bioversity, and MassBio recently joined program participants, city officials, lawmakers, and industry professionals at the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) in Lowell’s Hamilton Canal Innovation District.to cut the ribbon on a new laboratory that will expand hands-on training opportunities for individuals seeking careers in the life sciences industry.
Supported by a nearly $660,000 capital grant from the MLSC, the newly renovated space is equipped with industry-standard tools and technologies that reflect real-world biomanufacturing environments. This latest investment builds on more than $4 million previously awarded by the MLSC to support the development of M2D2, helping establish the facility as a hub for scientific innovation.
Through its partnership with UMass Lowell, Bioversity offers free, eight-week workforce training programs designed for unemployed and underemployed adults, including many without college degrees. Participants develop foundational technical skills, receive stipends, and benefit from individualized job placement support as they pursue careers in the life sciences industry. The MLSC has supported Bioversity through its Pathmaker program with more than $1.4 million since 2024.
