Strengthening the Pipeline: MLSC at the 2026 GMGI Education & Workforce Development Conference

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) was proud to sponsor and participate in this year’s Education & Workforce Development Conference. Hosted by the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI), the conference convened leaders from across industry, academia, government, non-profits, and workforce training organizations to examine how the life sciences ecosystem can better align around shared workforce development priorities. Discussions focused on the importance of building a more coordinated and resilient talent pipeline, particularly as the industry continues to navigate periods of rapid growth and change.

Kicking off the day, MLSC President and CEO Dr. Kirk Taylor delivered the plenary address, highlighting the critical role workforce development programs play in sustaining Massachusetts’ global leadership in the life sciences. He emphasized the need for continued investment in education and training initiatives to ensure individuals have access to stable, long-term career opportunities no matter their background and level of prior experience.

Following President Taylor’s speech, MLSC’s Chief Business Officer Jeanne LeClair participated in the panel, What’s Next for Biotech, where she joined industry leaders to discuss emerging trends and the evolving needs of the life sciences sector. The panel explored how organizations can work collaboratively to anticipate workforce demands, respond to shifts in the ecosystem, and maintain momentum in scientific innovation.

Since 2016, the MLSC has provided $3.6M in grant funding for research infrastructure and training equipment for Gloucester Biotechnology Academy, the educational arm of GMGI, enabling the development of its state-of-the-art research institute, as well as cell culture and biomanufacturing laboratories. Additionally, the MLSC has supported employer partners in providing more than 40% of the Academy’s internship opportunities, funding a total of 88 internships for GMGI students.

Through investments in workforce development programs and engagements with partners across the ecosystem, the MLSC continues to help ensure Massachusetts remains at the forefront of life sciences innovation, while supporting a skilled and diverse talent pipeline.
