The MLSC is proud to be featured in the latest issue of Boston University College of Engineering’s ENGineer Magazine. The feature highlights how MLSC investments are helping drive research innovation, Women’s Health initiatives, workforce development, and hands-on training opportunities that strengthen Massachusetts’ life sciences ecosystem.
Among the highlighted initiatives is Biomedical Research to Industry Development, Growth, Engineering, and Scale-up (BRIDGES) to Internships, a workforce development program launched with a $750,000 capital grant from the MLSC. The program provides students with industry-aligned training in biomaterials, cell and tissue engineering, drug delivery, and biomanufacturing while connecting them with internship and career opportunities across the Commonwealth.
The article also highlights the MLSC’s support for pioneering research at BU, including a recent First Look Award to Professor Wong and collaborators to advance a fallopian-tube-on-a-chip model designed to better understand how sexually transmitted infections can lead to tubal infertility, helping address a critical women’s health challenge that disproportionately affects women of color.
In addition, MLSC funding helped expand capabilities within BU College of Engineering’s Bio-Interface and Technology (BIT) Core facility through the acquisition of advanced training equipment, including a flow cytometer and microscopy tools. These resources provide students and researchers with access to cutting-edge technologies. The Center also invested $4.5 million in the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC), helping expand computational capacity for data-driven life sciences research.
To date, the MLSC has invested more than $12 million in programs and research initiatives at Boston University. Together, these investments help develop the next generation of life sciences talent, accelerate scientific discovery, and strengthen Massachusetts’ position as a global leader in life sciences.
